It took them until deadline day, but Liverpool finally did it. Two shiny brand-new centre-halves and we couldn’t be happier.
It was the worst kept secret in football that Liverpool were on the hunt for fresh bodies at the back – despite Jurgen Klopp’s best attempts at misdirection.
Ben Davies signed on the dotted line from Preston North End in a deal worth £2m. The 25-year-old boasts an impressive résumé, scooping the club’s Young Player of the Year award in 2017/18 followed by the Player of the Year award in 2018/19.
Davies will be a solid depth piece for years to come, but the undoubted main attraction was Schalke centre-back Ozan Kabak.
The Turkish international arrives with a unique opportunity owing to the status of the two clubs’ agreement. Impress and a permanent deal will soon follow. And Kabak will have plenty of opportunity to do just that with Liverpool’s need in central defence both glaring and immediate.
Buying in January can be fraught with risk, but this was a move the Reds simply HAD to make.
